Ballistic Glass and Windows

What is Ballistic Glass?

Ballistic Glass is also known as Bullet-resistant Glass is a strong and visually transparent material that is resistant to being penetrated when attacked. The more layers there is the better protection the glass offers. Usually, bullet-resistant glass is made from a layered combination of two or more types of glass, one is harder, and one is soft. The softer glass layer is meant to make the overall glass more elastic-like so that the glass will flex on impact instead of shatter. Sometimes the glass will have inner layers of various plastics as well as a final layer of either polycarbonate or another plastic film to prevent spalling upon on impact. Depending on the application, ballistic glass can range in thickness from 0.75” (19mm) to 3.50” (89mm).

How Ballistic Glass Works

Because no glass is completely bulletproof, we in the security industry prefer the term bullet-resistant. When a bullet collides with ballistic glass, the attacking energy is absorbed and then spread out sideways throughout the layers. The energy from the bullet impact is divided between the layers of glass and plastic while being spread over the area of the glass quickly absorbing the impact. The bullet will be slowed down so much that it no longer has enough energy to pierce through the glass or it will be much less damaging if it does pierce completely through. You will notice that the glass panes will break after an attack however, the inner layers will stop the outer glass layers from breaking apart completely.
